This is an excellent ep, don't be turned off by the age (release date) as all contained within is of top quality. 'Quagmire' & 'Exchange' come at you on the steppa tip with bouncy basslines. Both tunes pull out some lovely squelchy bass distortion to go with the plodding head-nod of the blines, both featuring great build ups & drops which don't disappoint. 'Ripe' scoops honours as quirkiest track, featuring a hyperactive guitar-riff intro which throws you headlong into a pounding bline - shortcut to dancefloor destruction methinks! Which leaves only 'Downpour' to comment on I guess, and I must add I have left the finest till last. Easily the standout, it features a beautiful piano & vocal intro which provides an amazing counterpoint to the ensuing madness & makes for much rewind potential. When the frantic, loopy build-up finally releases the bline is full & heavy, but without lacking a very pleasant, dirty kind of funk. It really does not let up once the momentum is up ao make the most of that build up coz it's a stunner! Second thoughts? Please do not have any, this is perfect for the darksider or the more funk-minded individual who doesn't mind a bit of grime with their step. Just remember it aint all about the dubs, it's about the production - or for the lamen - how it SOUNDS, and this sounds sublime. But then I love Calyx!
