This debut is no mean feat. Amidst tons of releases that incorporate studio gimmicks and electronic devices all over, Caro manages to come across natural, without sounding contrived. Although traces of the likes of Peggy Lee and The Andrews Sisters are found almost everywhere, the music never really ressembles any of these, but instead just plays around with pre-war and 40s atmospheres and mostly still arrives at sounding contemporary. The mix of styles is impressive: rumba, ska, rap, soul, cocktail jazz, b-movie soundtrack, even a modest scratcher, it's all there, somehow concocted into something quite meaningful, yet entertaining. Her backing band sounds confident enough, but could use some more different colours in their palette, the wide array of styles notwithstanding. Some tracks could do with more transparency. A few of the arrangements are on the very border to kitsch, especially on those tracks where the style-clichés are not really turned into something not heard before. Luckily, the suave voice of Caro herself saves the day for almost everything presented here. The main quibble lies in the uneven quality of the compositions. While some of these tracks boast truly memorable melodies and progressions, brilliancy even, some decidedly do not, while leaning just too heavily on examples from a past long gone. A true ballad, highlighting the vocal abilities of the singer, is sorely missed. That being said, there is much that sounds promising. We can but hope that Caro emerges from her sudden mega succes unscathed and independent enough to explore her talent into various directions, without falling into the trap of repeating herself too readily. Yet, a very fine debut album of a highly talented singer, this is. Recommended...
