Incredible album.. Thought this was a 'Best of' when I first heard it.
Just buy it if you ever come across this masterpiece. And it should be relatively easy, as it (not surprisingly)sold very well.

Thirty-plus years on and this is still fresh as a daisy. Walter Becker applied the necessary, rounded off all the edges and gave everything a mature gloss. The songs are rock solid and (luckily) these days don't get played much so retain that 'just minted' quality. They tried to repeat the trick but somehow it wasn't to be. Great up-tempo / down-tempo relaxing music to get you going.

It's high time Virgin pull their thumbs out and remaster all the China Crisis albums. Bonus tracks too please! And for God's sake's don't let Rhino or Cherry Red anywhere near them! If Virgin can't be bothered maybe give Edsel a crack at 'em. They did a reasonably fine job with the Blancmange & Thompson Twins!

I don't understand where this Catalog# (9-25296-1)
is coming from. The # 1-25296 is clearly printed on the label (klick more images), and etched on the vinyl as well.

This is the China Crisis album for any fans of Steely Dan. Produced by Walter Becker, who liked them enough to mention it to someone in charge, this album even features lead singer Garry Daly altering his phrasing to resemble Donald Fagen! The players are all sharp enough to reach Dan levels of performance without Becker throwing in any ringers, but as a fan of previous albums, I found this one less than compelling. The nadir is the MOR single, "You Did Cut Me." Worse than Steely Dan at their most commercial without the benefit of their usually sharp lyrics [lyrics never being a particular China Crisis strength].

Conversely, the closing "Blue Sea" is a truly impressive achievement of a cinematic tune from this normally lower key, introspective band. "Bigger The Punch I'm Feeling" has a strong whiff of The Dan, as does "The Highest High" but the tone is lighter and approaches playfulness - never a factor in Steely Dan. I sort of wish Becker had never got his mitts on the group, but it's not an abject failure by any means. Nevertheless, the chart success of this album altered China Crisis' artistic trajectory to the extent that they stayed basically within its' parameters even when produced by Mike Thorne and Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley in addition to Becker on subsequent albums. Going back to the first two albums, I can't help but have a sense of loss.
