Can't confirm the source of this and I know 4mwb is notorious for awful pressings, but I actually prefer this over the Omnivore pressing for one reason only: I can listen to it straight through without feeling frustrated. While, the Omnivore has better mastering it is plagued by an overall terrible pressing. The pops and sibilance on some of the tracks interrupt the enjoyability factor and make the album as a whole almost unlistenable. I do hope they repress those at some point. Until then, this will do. Not the greatest sounding thing but at least it plays...

For my copy anyway, sound quality of source/cut is excellent. But I do have some minor defects, distortion on side two.

Chris Bell was an original member of mighty pop legends Big Star, but quit the band after their debut, #1 Record failed to propel them to super stardom. For the next few years years, Bell struggled with depression while recording demo after demo. In 1977, Bell released the single "I Am The Cosmos", an amazing little slab of practically perfect pop, an absolutely beautiful gem, dense with wistful harmonies and glistening instrumentation, which ended up being a big enough hit that it drove Bell to form a band to begin work on a new album. But before that could happen, Bell died in a tragic car accident. I Am The Cosmos is a collection of all of his unreleased demos, but plays like some lost classic album. As good as any of the Big Star records for sure. A dark and brooding, dreamy and glistening pop masterpiece, from beginning to end. Super varied, from crunchy melodic power pop to deep introspective ballads, but somehow all the parts fit perfectly. So goddamn good.

@ e8ghtmileshigh True that - this sucks - hoping a double LP comes out as I think it will do well. Avoid 4 Men With Beards like the plague. Sounded awful.

It's a shame that the only way to get this on vinyl is a scrappy 4 Men With Beards CD rip.

This is a fantastic album of various recordings by Chris Bell who was one of the original members of Big Star. The songs on this album may come from a dark time in his life before his death in a car accident, but they are some amazing songs. Very heartfelt and emotional.

Some of the songs you hear in movie soundtracks like the Speed of Sound is the opening track for the Nick and Norah soundtrack. My personal favorite is You and Your Sister. Chris Bell had a bit of a strained relationship with Alex Chilton after he left Big Star and it almost comes off as a song asking for forgiveness.

Often magnificient album from Chris Bell in a desolated, deliquescent morphine and whisky fuelled country-rock mood.
But, where one can prefer "You And Your Sister"'s heavenly interpretation by This Mortal Coil instead of the slightly messy/drunk original present here, one song particularily hits the soul : "Look Up".
An absolutely breathtaking moment of slowed-down jesus-on-heroin-mysticism sung with an aching fallen angel voice, that can easily bring the toughest listener to tears. One to be played at 1st class funerals.
