Clay Vause was one-half of the sound poetry/tape manipulating duo Plato's Nightclub. He is also part of the minimal, space exploring band, indian rope burn. He has worked with the ritualistic tribal trances of Lizard and has made some recordings with Pat-Man and the Mind Kopperz.
Here, Clay sheds his collaborative project's snakeskins, with his first solo release. "Film Nocturnal" takes all the elements hinted at in earlier projects and takes them to their unrestricted extremes.
The cassette contains an eclectic mixture of styles ranging from minimal rhythms to layered textures to R&B to electronic experimentation to straight rock. All contain the "on and over the edge" lyrics that Clay is associated with.
Not quite "songs", not quite "poetry", the sound seems to create its own musical vocabulary and a set of norms.
The different moods employed create many different emotional responses. Therefore the listener can provide his/her own special effects to their own "Film Nocturnal".
