The quasi-hip hop drums that appear on several tracks on this album are a bit odd. But, then again, I remember thinking the same thing about Frontline Assembly's "Tactical Neural Implant" album. I guess it was just in these self-serious industrial guys' blood in 1992. Honestly, in retrospect, I still actually enjoy the odd juxtapositions here. The first song alone is like Controlled Bleeding's grindy growly heavy thing merged with, uh, styles reminiscent of Consolidated, KMFDM, and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. There's a bit of an odd jazz-funk thing happening in the change sections, then a suddenly scorchy metal solo. Track 3 is in more Ministry/Jourgensen territory, a fast-paced thrashy industrial guitar rage into another metalfied solo. Track 5 is back to the pseudo-TKK/KMFDM-style, with electronic faux-slap funk bass, a sort of distorted vocal rap, restlessly propulsive percussion. Track 6 returns us to the Jourgensen-ballistic-assault sound, apparently remixed by J.A.T.H. (Joined At The Head), a Controlled Bleeding side project group. "Will To Power (And Throwin' Down)" is a bit RevCo. Track 9 is one of their pure noise assaults, a bit out of place on an album that's otherwise entirely rooted in percussive post-industrial dance of the early 1990s. The final track, "Awakened Beneath The Ground" is actually pretty in spots, but still with the stately self-serious goth darkness. It, too, feels a bit out of place on this album. I want to make a video for it by putting silent footage of people playing Magic: The Gathering over top of the audio. Listening back to this album now, it really did belong sonically on Wax Trax! Records, and not on Third Mind.
