Although I'm not quite the biggest Varela advocate around, this compilation has its benefits, and bright points. Naturally, whoever listens will regret the choice made by the compilers not to include some of his other notable contributions, but for a double compact disc overview of his career, I doubt you'll get anything better than this. You know the basic drill: for fans of labels like MB Elektronics or Recycled Loops, and its respective artists (Marco Bailey, Tom Hades, Redhead, Axel Karakasis, Umek - the "Voices of Africa" releases, Leandro Gamez and the likes), this should provide you with more of that sound. A strongly emphasized feel throughout, sometimes just deviant and pounding, at times loopy and injected with catchy vocal snippets, then again very tech houseish, ideal for summer sunrises on open terraces. Like most compilations in the field of electronic music, there are a few bonafide diamonds, a fair chunk of decent material you'll occasionally put on when in need of some inconspicuous easy going techno while doing something else, and some filler to restore balance.
Personally, I was never fond on either this stuff, or any released on the labels I listed above, but it will serve its purpose. As formulaic and samey as it may be, every once in a while a true gem popped up on Varela's imprint. Namely, for me, Arythmetic Structures, by a mile the best thing he ever recorded, with dozens of vicious machete blades simultaneously pending over your head about to reduce it to a nice amount of beef jerky. Pure bestial techno madness, and I can hardly explain how powerful this sounds on a proper club sound system.
Then, Agressiva with its dense shuffled percussion and an inimitable, perfectly executed sharp synth drop some two minutes deep. Hard as a cannonball possessing the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it through the steadily building music. As nervous as it's irresistibly hypnotic, once the synths kick in full gear, this one really takes off with all of its aggressive grit.
Pitch Structures, with its rewinding effect and back spins, is a hard tribal banger, that'll whip you head to toe in a humble five minute time span. Goes very well with all of that bass heavy, tribal stuff Ben Sims knows how to nail down in his DJ sets. One of Varela's all time finest proper techno offerings, with none of that vocal, latin tribal flavor which can tarnish some of his otherwise decent works.
From where my interests stand, that would be it... The remainder of this compilation is not really my thing, but that doesn't mean you should automatically dismiss it. A career lasting fifteen years and then some is covered, so it'd be a miracle if "The Best Of Cristian Varela - From 1992 To 2009" was a front to back classic loaded package.
For those interested in the breakdown, or the eventual acquiring of the original releases from which these tracks have been taken, here it is:

Elektribus - "New concept EP" (Primate Records) (PRMT066) (2002)
Flesh (Remix) - "Experment 1" (Black Codes Experiments) (BCODES001) (2003)
Point - "The Eighth Porn Cut" (Pornographic Recordings) (PORN008) (2002)
Retroland - "For My Brother EP" (MB Elektronics) (MBELEK022) (2005)
Intensityva - "The Fourth Porn Cut" (Pornographic Recordings) (PORNO 004) - on the actual EP, the track's title is spelled 'Intensitiva'.
Lunatic Dream (Remix) - "El Cigarrito" (Distribuidora Internacional del Disco S.A.) (DID - 1022/8) (1994)
Arythmetic Structures - "The First Porn Cut" (Pornographic Recordings) (PORNO 001) (2001)
Hard Sperm - The Sixth Porn Cut (Pornographic Recordings) (PORNO 006) (2002)
Symetric Bases - "Generator Feelings EP" (Primate Recordings) (PRMT 042) (2000)
Agressiva - "For My Brother EP" (MB Elektronics) (MBELEK022) (2005)
Pitch Structures - "From Spain To Holland" (Highland Beats Technology Music Works) (HB 019) (2001)
Pains - "New Electronic Audio / Architectures LP" (Primate Recordings) (PRMT ALP 002) (2000)
Puzzledrums - "Groovy Wavedrums E.P." (Primate Recordings) (PRMT 032) (1999) - on the actual EP, the track's title is spelled 'Puzzle Drums'.
My Way - "New Electronic Audio / Architectures LP" (Primate Recordings) (PRMT ALP 002) (2000)

One final remark. This CD seems virtually impossible to track down nowadays. I got it straight from the source upon its initial release, but apparently it went out of stock in no time, which in a way is a shame, since this release is a good way to get started on the man's work and label, and maybe even urge people to do some crate digging, and seek out some lost jewels on wax.
