Current 93 - LIVE AT BAR MALDOROR (Durtro 001) CD 53m
Usually the CD reissue of an album like this is most welcome, certainly when it's one of the finest Current 93 have created, but, lo and behold, this has been taken from a record - and not a very good pressing at that! Surely someone must have had the tapes or at least an unplayed copy? Of course there are two bonus tracks (one a reversed recording with added effects), and both are very good. An album that's twenty years old on a label that disappeared shortly after, you'd be able to forgive it! I'm sure Steven Stapleton wouldn't be pleased, as he's usually hyper-finicky about the quality of his product.

Bar Maldoror was an imaginary location chosen by David Tibet and Steven Stapleton to host their live shows (the NWW use was short lived after Stapleton's early retirement from performing). The location of Bar Maldoror was wherever either NWW or Current 93 happened to be performing. While the name was fairly short-lived, it would still be sensible to expect C93's Live at Bar Maldoror to be a live album. It is not.

What we have here, instead, is most likely a live studio performance by Tibet and Stapleton, providing a new live mix of existing material. Given that the album was the first release on Tibet's Mi-Mort label, I can't help feel it was actually put together to give him something to kick the label off. The actual content of the album is effectively a seamless mix of Ach Golgotha and Raio No Terrasu from Nature Unveiled and Dogs Blood Rising respectively. The tracks are stripped of their dynamics, blurred into something more closely resembling dark ambient.

The result of this is basically forty minutes of choir loops and Tibet's wailing, with a lot of reverb and some flanging effects. The album has its fans, but overall is one of Current 93's least rewarding efforts. Check it out if you love the other early works, but even then, make sure to listen before you buy - you may find this one incredibly boring.

The first track Alone Into the Alone (19;28 ) very similar to Ach Golgotha from Nature Unveiled,
the voices and the sounds come from ancient world in distant galaxy during ritual expression of grief at a funeral ,
the chanting, the prayers of crying and the sound effects create hypnotic atmosphere, the music taking you into an ocean of darkness.

2. Only Shadows of Hooks - This is a show of ghosts who took over a church.

Tracks 3&4 - These two tracks are connected together, Christ's First Howling and Fields of Rape,
the music and the vocals sound like the last death throes voices of an entire galaxy that swallowed up into a black hole of an endless depth.

If you like current 93 album Nature Unveiled then this is definitely an album for you.

Apparently there is a small number of copies that have a Bible page over the record opening and a felt patch inside.

The uploaded cover is not the correct one. The year (MCMXCIII) is not mentionned on this version.
