Introspective is one of the Eye Q 90's trance greats that was forgotten and eclipsed by the more club Orange chocolate biscuit Theme.

So champion Introspective all the way - Beautiful !

Do though check out legend Blu Peter's remix of The Orange Theme on the UK Eye Q label. Nice bit of acid towards the end gotta have that :)

My copy is labelled up in exactly the same way as this release including the same catalogue number, but it doesn't actually contain the Original Mix. Can anyone else confirm this is the case?

Right, well here we are...

The ULTIMATE collection of remixes.

It's obviously right to begin with the original version (we're starting at track 3 here, always ignore edits). This 1994 anthem was rightly selected to be remixed for the 1999 trance revival, and listening back to the genius of the original mix it's easy to understand why. The dark keys that soaked through the track (courtesy of the original theme from "A Clockwork Orange" by Wendy Carlos) lend themselves gracefully to the hard trance vibe of the era.

Red Jerry's 1995 remix really added some class to the track while reducing the tempo. His remix really screams eastern promise, as was Red Jerry's style. The drop is particularly effective, introducing the typical off-beat vocal stab so effective in his work of the period.

Ferry Corsten's Moonman "Orange Juice" remix is excellent too. Notching the tempo up almost to that of the original (much to the annoyance surely of many a 1999 DJ), he injects some energy into the track that was missing from trance since around 1995. There were surely many a DJ set that had to be increased in tempo just to keep this mix around 0% on a 1210!

The Man With No Name surprisingly tones his sound down into an almost progressive vibe for his remix, perhaps to appeal to a wider audience but who knows. Still, it retains his trademark psy-trance heart. Nice choral sounds are introduced in the breakdown alongside the melody, and a strong bassline carries the remix along.

The Push remix is not one of his best in my opinion, to me it sounds as if he simply tried to rework Universal Nation around the melody of The Orange Theme. M.I.K.E. is capable of genius but in this case it almost feels as if he was on autopilot, which is a great shame considering it was an Eye Q anthem he was put in charge of. It actually reminds me of his remix of Fridge's Paradise, a lazy effort.

Solarstone's remix is predictably progressive, and it works nicely. A steady groove carries the melody with the typical strong Solarstone production, not all that exciting compared to their original work but successful all the same.

The Bervoets & de Goeij (aka Rank 1) remix was chosen as the radio edit mix in the UK, and predictably so given the duo's success with "Airwave" the same year. The remix starts off with a heavy, slow intro that gradually introduces the melody fully without a beat intro. The remix eases in nicely to a typical Rank 1 style track, taking the melody and arpegiatting it à la Black Snow. Without a doubt the most "1999" sounding of the remixes.

The remixes end with Blue Alphabet's "Lawnmower Man" remix. Now this was something special. Featuring a sound not heard from Blue Alphabet since they released their seminal "Cybertrance" in 1994, this remix really hits hard.

Every essence of the original is here, plus a feeling rarely heard since the inception. It is truly hard to believe that this remix was from 1999, such is the emotion portrayed. The tempo must be around 150bpm (much like the original) and the overall vibe simply screams the mid-90's trance zeitgeist.

Truly a fantastic remix, and honestly the pick of a great batch on offer on this CDM.

With this release you can honestly lay claim to have the definitive collection of remixes.

Good luck finding one without breaking your bank balance.

One of the best classical techno-trance themes. My guess is that it is techno-trance at its best. Unforgettable, but then again we must remember that the original melody was created by the genious Purcell, and beautifully worked by Wendy Carlos on the "Clockwork Orange" famous theme.

I've always considered "The Orange Theme" a turd in Eye Q's catalogue. It's crude, in-your-face and unsophisticated, and reeks of UK superclubs and "Now that's what I call trance" compilations.

But the flip side of this original release is magnificent. See, "Introspective" is just that - a pensive, poignant track imbued with the kind of warm melancholy often heard in the best early 90's trance. You needn't waste your time on the overplayed A side - this is the real deal. Beautiful.
