The first release by Chris Brown (Eruption) and the first release on his label, United Dance Recordings is a good snapshot of where the scene was in 1993. Darker tunes ruled the roost, so the artists who were inclined towards a happier sound had to mix the two styles up in their productions.
Of the two tracks, 'In Jeopardy' is the darker, starting with a spoken word sample from the movie Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me and lots of atmosphere, punctuated by a happier piano/stab riff. Then suddenly, a third of the way through the tune the piano comes in. One of my favourites.
Hold On on the flip, is more in the early happy mode, though still fairly restrained, featuring a Lisa Stansfield vocal sample and some nice piano work.
