I'm going to review this version rather than the original. The fact that it had a repress at all tells you about the strength of both tracks. Bryan Gee & JJF (V Recordings) were from the early days closely associated with Roni Size/Krust/Reprazent. I have most of the Bristol crew's early V tracks, and these two are pure gold. Krust was a pioneer, especially of the then burgeoning more minimalist, 2 step style that was becoming more and more popular. It's hard to pick a favourite from this 12. Poison is such a great track, with a nasty break beat and snares, and the gradual stuttering introduction of the 'This is Poison' hook. A deliciously dark top drawer piece of work. Set Speed is also real masterpiece. At first listen it sounds very repetitive. But 'Listen carefully again' (lol), and you can hear that every break is different. Elements are brought in and taken out, or altered slightly, to create a monster tune that is a true roller. Subtle, but extremely effective. An absolute classic that has still managed to keep an underground feel. A great tune to mix, this is an old favourite of mine that I still love to rinse even now. The original press in the dark blue cover is gradually creeping up in price, but the light blue covered repress is still widely available for a reasonable price. Do yourself a favour and grab yourself a copy of this classic slice of true riollers heaven. Definitely must have business.
