A masterful, educational and multicultural mixtape from Jace Clayton aka DJ /rupture, encompassing hip-hop, dancehall, jungle, breakcore, world music, electronica, experimental, musique concrete, etc.

The mix succeeds not only in the choice of music -- many of them relatively obscure and almost assuredly only available on vinyl, from stiff drum-machine riddims to dusty Arabic folk records -- but also in the manner they're presented.

Clayton has truly deft turntable skill, manipulating the records freely by hand -- adding spinbacks as flourishes over other mixes, speeding up records into infinity, screwing ragga jungle down from 45 to 33, dropping brave blink-and-you'll-miss-it blends, adding multiple seamless acapellas… all this live on 3 decks. As with the best DJ mixes, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Most importantly, the mix recontextualizes urban voices both conscious (Dead Prez) and seemingly irreverent (Project Pat), taking them in directions they never could have imagined. Wu-Tang Clan and Cannibal Ox rub shoulders with ghostly Armenian folk. Shabba Ranks chatter sits comfortably alongside 170+ BPM gabber hardcore.

This heavy blurring of genres is especially evident in Clayton's own numerous unclassifiable productions featured on the mix, under his own name and as a member of Nettle. Really out-there stuff.

As of today, this mix is still available as a free download from the Soot Records website.

From start to finish this is one hell of a sonic experiment. Rupture takes you on a journey that covers every aspect of music and noise that you could ever wish for. Venetian Snares shares a tracklist with Paul Simon and a whole load of violent beats, insane rhythms and plenty of ragga toasting. This is what a DJ mix is about. Only Coldcut´s reknowned Journeys by DJ mix comes close to what Rupture had done on this CD, and even that was a studio venture. Gold Teeth Thief is an audio assault that manages to capture the essence of a diverse range of musical genres and mashes them up together in a coherent and unforgettable live DJ mix (yup, you can even hear the odd fuck-up).
