okay, Damien Rices Sophmore effort is very good. It has some great songs like 9 and grey room. And some very good ones like the animals were gone, accidental babies, and Sleep don't weep. it also has some good rock out songs like Rootless tree and Me my yoke and I. Coconut skins is a fun song as well. but still it manages to be somewhat of a dissapointment.

O was if not the best then one of the best debut albums from a singer song-writer so far this decade. It was just amazing, and perfect in every way. I think that the reason this album isn't quite as good is because Damien is an arTIST. He dosen't want to repeat himself, so in return his work is getting pumped full of more mature situations and even warrents a parental advisory sticker.

The songs are a very weird group and some are very unfocused. Elephant is almost just an excercise, Cocunut skins is just plane weird, and Dogs seems to naturalistic, kinda like the barenaked ladies except sad... he doesn't seem to know what he wants from this and it has become apparent that he isn't a natural song-writer. It's hard for him. Even O isn't a great excercise in song-writing, everything was so simple and the themes were very universal. But this one seems more personal and he has seemed to direct these simple themes into something only he can relate to, and it's annoying because as a listener I can't seem to grasp what he means. it's very cryptic.

Also the album isn't very well produced, the accoustic often over powers his voice and the distortion goes too far. one sad thing as well, is the absence of Lisa hannigan from most of the album, she really gives him a different dimension. She sang with him on almost every song on O. Like I said, it's very personal and Damien to the bone.

I'd give this overall 6.5/10. O being a 10/10. 9 crimes is the only song he seemed to really grasp his previous style and in return it's as good as anything he's ever done.
