William S Burroughs was the inventor of the so-called 'cut-up technique' whereby the author randomly cuts up with scissors lines of a story, a diary entry etc and then reassembles the fragments to come up with a completely new narrative text. Bowie was inspired by this technique, as to which he exstensively employed the method when composing a number of songs for the LP 'Diamond Dogs' but would reutilise this lyric composing method on other works.
