My copy of this pressing sounds very good. It has nice deep lows without sacrificing any of the presence and bite in the midrange. The stereo imaging is as wide as I've heard for a long time which gives a nice submersive experience.

Achieving only moderate success, If Only I Could Remember My Name has more going for it than one would expect on first glance. Being recorded at the same times as the Jefferson Starship’s Blows Against The Empire, with the players including Paul Kantner, Santana, members of The Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchel, and others, they dubbed themselves with the moniker The Great Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra.

If Only I Could Remember My Name was one of those odd moments in rock n’ roll history, and may have been the first time [with KISS doing the same thing several years later] that all the members of a band, in this case Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, put out their own solo releases in order to ride the wave of their chart topper Deja Vu ... Neil Young released After The Gold Rush, Stephen Stills released his self titled album, and Graham Nash released Songs For Beginners. With all do respect to David, he was adrift and it shows, with the album suffering a bit as it was almost entirely a lament to his longtime girlfriend Christine Hinton, who had been killed in a car accident the year before. The album is a bit uneven in it’s context, construct and nature, with much of the music being left over from the CSN&Y sessions that morphed into this timeless set, with even Crosby telling Rolling Stone magazine that he’d no intentions or releasing and album of bummer material.

Time has been much kinder to this album over the years than it has to many, reasoning that as time passed, fewer and fewer people were around who where there then, remembering the genesis of the album, or that it was perhaps part of an industry sparked sell-out of sorts by the members of CSN&Y, allowing it to acquire its own place in the annals of musical history. Today the album’s songs sound like one is looking through a box of black & white snapshots, not knowing who the people are, yet appreciating the imagery, art, and skill. Strangely enough, the album sounds like a dreamy wash, if not an ominous bit California ambience. Without hesitation, liking the album or not, there is not one false step, there’s not one missed note, nor does the album fall short of its intended mark ... though in 1970, David wasn’t so sure of that, being that he was just a man on a mission with demons to excise, and emotions to vent. Sadly it would be nearly twenty years before Crosby [due to drug addiction] would release another solo project. Nevertheless, If Only I Could Remember My Name has been a source of inspiration and influence to many, transcending the diaspora that hung over the frayed CSN&Y, standing as a masterpiece not only to the remembrance of Christine Hinton, but to the changing of a decade, the changing of attitudes, and a final look-back at the 1960’s in all of its glory and eternal presence.

Blown out/over limited remaster (all versions tested except HDCD), steer clear. Original CD sounds much better, loads more dynamic range etc. Missed opportunity.

This is all around, as others here have stated, a really strong album in the Laurel Canyon genre. Side I is largely better than side II (partly due to the inclusion of the saccharine dullness of Traction in the Rain, and the somewhat meandering Song with No Words). Very lush arrangments -- the adhoc licks of J. Garcia in his signature tone, and Crosby's typical strong melodies. Recommended.

I might add another style to this album: "California Rock." Specifically, sunny, laid-back California rock. Great album, possibly the best all-around album to come out of the entire CSNY camp during this time.

In 2004 my wife and I celebrated our first anniversary in the Bay Area. We sat in our rental car at Sonoma Coast State Beach, watching the sun set, listening to "Laughing." Just a fantastic song that has a beautiful Pacific sunset practically built-in.

Until just now, I had no idea that "Cowboy Music" was actually about the temporary breakup of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Prior to my reading about it on allmusic.com, I thought the song was about a....cowboy fighting his way through life or something. All I knew was that, of all the signature songs by each CSNY member respectively, Cowboy music is my favorite. There's a particular psychedelic spaciness (provided in part by the Grateful Dead) that is more successful than the colorful optimism of Stephen Stills, the decidedly humble approach of Graham Nash or the 10 minute long breakdowns of Neil Young and co.
