The kind of techno on offer here – with its aggressive swing, meticulous beat manipulation and ‘bar jazz played by robots’ type keys – couldn’t sound more outlandish these days. I’d argue that Same Place the Bot Got Smashed serves as a good (if uncharacteristically muscular) example of the glitch-informed sound Force Inc. and Harthouse leaned towards at the time. This is definitely a forceful, at times hectic, in-your-face techno record; at the same time it offers plenty of home listening value thanks to the often playful production and Manowski’s attention to detail.
