Another mediocre bunch of remixes. I like Morales but De La Soul is not a house band. The B side remixes just don't flow with a hip-hop track -- when will these people ever learn? The only good version as usual is the LP version which is usually the case in Hip-Hop 12" releases. They should have included the instrumental of the LP version instead of 40+ minutes of junk.
Anyway the scratching on the LP version is crazy good. One of the best heavy sampled tunes from De La Soul.

"Backsleeve and Disc both says it's got 8 tracks, while there are only 4 as written above."
Interesting information above, although my disc is printed with 4 tracks.

Even though De La Soul "Roller Skating Jam" lists with many of their Hip Hop undeniable mega-hits, I would like to point out David Morales legendary remixes. From the view point of house music they are priceless gems and by those I mean 6:00AM Mix and Mo Mo Dub, which are strip down versions of original track that are pushed in totally different direction. This was the sign in 1990 for what is yet to come from the genius mind of Mr. Morales. It is deep house music as it always should have been: simple, profound and with hard hitting piano synth.

I am wondering; why do most of these releases only contain mediocre to wack remixes of this top notch track, and not the original? It doesn't make sense.

Back in 1990-'91 I bought so many of the Tommy Boy "12" Cassettes" that came out (basically, they'd just issue their extended 12" singles on cassette as well, with the confusing format "12" Cassette" or "12" Cass" on the spine. In retrospect, a weird idea. Why not just say "Maxi-Single"? Almost as weird as labels occasionally putting "12" CD" on CD Maxis.) My favorites were the De La Soul ones, Queen Latifah, Digital Underground, Stetsasonic... and this one was probably the best of the bunch. The b-sides are weird and intricate, loopy, and yet thematically tied to the main track. The remixes push the original further into disco and house territory, until by the time you get to the Morales "Mo Mo Dub" version, it's barely recognizable as being a version of "Roller Skating Jam" at all, except for some impressionistic chords and notes, and a loose summertime dancefloor energy. Even that cover artwork: so good. I often saved my lunch money to go to the record store and spend my $4.99 (or $5.99? I can't remember clearly) for whatever was new that week. Halcyon days, I tell you.

One of my favourite Hip Hop tunes of all time and a certified five star classic party tune. Infact this tune crosses over into House & Disco territory, it's that good. The lyrics are just fantastic and sum up that weekend feeling that you get, when you feel free, at least for a couple of days, before returning to the grindstone.

This is probably one of my all-time favorites tracks that the Soul have ever released. From the severely underrated DE LA SOUL IS DEAD offering, this ain't nothing but a feel-good party tune, primed for the dancefloor, aimed at placing a smile on your face. And though skating may be a thing of the past, blading isn't; so feel free to blade to this all you want. Of course, I'd regret not mentioning that Mr. Morales did a heck of a job on these mixes with its retro-styled vibe (even sounding a bit retro back then in '90 when it came out) - whoever suggested that hip-hop and house combine on this hit, THANK YOU! Why can't there be more releases like this nowadays?
