DEAD COWBOY CULTURE
THE REST IS SILENCE
(no label) CD 48m
One of those local bands that we encountered accidentally, just because we'd got a free invite to a Black Carrot concert supporting The Blessing. Dead Cowboy Culture were the opening band, and certainly a curious outfit, befitting the name, they didn't fit anywhere, with all sorts of music, from country through to punk, from psych to French weirdo indie styles, all that within a distinctive music all held together by front man Doc Scott.
The twelve tracks on this debut CD cover a hell of a lot of ground, and much of it is presented in a much more polished fashion than when they are live, a much richer palette of instruments for one thing, but less of those wigged-out jazzy improv bits that they do live. Some of it is great, whereas some just grates! Some of that is saved by the pastiche edge added, a touch of The Residents I guess, although we could say there's an oddball Madness meets Pere Ubu, by way of the Paris Metro. Impossible to classify!
Recently, with a new guitarist, the material has also become more instrumental, and they are pushing the envelope a little. So, maybe this debut is a taster of the promise of what is to come?
