Originally written for the English cellist Beatrice Harrison (who recorded the Elgar cello concerto with Elgar himself conducting) but world-premiered by Russian cellist Alexandre Barjansky (whose cello is now played by Julian Lloyd Webber!), this is the best Delius cello concerto recording you will ever find and possibly one of Julian Lloyd Webber's finest ever. Forget Du Pre's!
It is a wonderful, lyrical work, music that is evocative, not depictive and deeply felt, Julian Lloyd Webber's cello really 'sings' it to perfection. No wonder Elgar himself told Delius that the work by Delius he longed to conduct was the 'beautiful cello concerto'.
The album offers two world premiere recordings as well, Holst's beautiful 'Invocation' and Vaughan William's 'Fantasia on Sussex Fold Tunes'.
