Erotikon is an exercise about self induced madness or simply delirium fever, maybe both?
Maybe it is precisely the exact delineation between insanity from good sense. And that is really hard to qualify while listening to it. One is not sure if this a joke (a very dark one indeed), or a serious issue that compromises our capacity to remain sane. It’s a middle end, an unresolved question. The brutal conundrum that has conformed Deutsch Nepal for almost two decades now, that’s for sure.
It’s dense and desperate in content, obviously decadent and apocalyptical yet simplistic in terms of construction (that includes the artwork). But for some reason there’s something that is really seductive and appealing behind its apparently “easy” and out of hand work. The dark erotic surrealism that evokes, the self comforted anguish that permeates the entire album, the vertigo that comes from the lyric in “Blowjob parasite”, the frantic and endless tribal alike rhythm loops repeating ad-nauseam, the psychotic undertones and drones that circulate around the rhythms, this is pure virulence, plague as music…
It’s understandable why this album can fall as disappointing. Its overall simplicity being the main cause. The necessary comparisons with previous material as the second.
But the work acquires his main goal and that is to bring a hint of apocalypse. Part of a personal one, part of universal one and that is something that can’t be denied and can be certainly called a hit.
“Lina” seem to have abandoned the florid spectrum of his darkly past creations and returned to some unknown dismal primitivism in him that is a lot more obscure and effective in terms of sensations and feelings for the listener, yet losing from that odd shaded baroque style that gave him his fame and from which we were more accustomed to.
Things change. Yet everything remains the same.
