There’s an old adage that goes, “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.”

Before there was anyone other of note, there were The Supremes, they were seductive, sassy, dazzling, topical, adventurous, and best of all, they were very danceable. Of course, The Supremes would have been nothing of note had it not been for the Motown Label, their top notch writing staff, musicianship, and Motown’s ability to get the most out of an artist. With that in mind, The Supremes didn’t hit number one right out of the gate, it took some time, with Motown even considering dropping the group from their label, though cooler heads prevailed when it came to this group who could delivered majestic harmonies, along with emotional R&B and soul music.

Of course the only person most people can name from this knockout outfit is that of Diana Ross, relegating the other two members to nothing but background singers, which is akin to saying that Bill Wyman was just a bass player. If one takes the time to actually listen to The Supremes, it’s instantly clear that founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Willson, and eventually Betty McGlown who would be replaced by Barbara Martin during the 60’s, brought something to the table that was uniquely eloquent, with the ability to support and move the song along with accents and improvisation that created an atmosphere of inspiration and joy.

Embracing an image of glamour, The Supremes were destined to rise to the top of the charts, and in so doing, as often happens, the face and voice of the band, Diana Ross, began to think that she alone was responsible for all that The Supremes were and ever would be, so much so, that either by choice or encouragement, perhaps a bit of both, she jettisoned her longtime mates in favor of a solo career. Jumping ship as she did only allowed her to become a parody of The Supremes, never able to recapture that initial harmonic success … and while bringing her praise, her sound became so commercial, that like Elvis Presley, she had nowhere to go with her multiple costume changes other than to Las Vegas, where she certainly was at the pinnacle regarding achievements, yet she was now sounding hollow, as she’d rejected those who knew her with an intimacy, who’d made the climb with her out of the Brewster Doulas Housing Project, and into the hearts of black and white Americans of every age during the 1960’s.

Regardless, it’s the work achieved by the actual Supremes that stands alone, casting a long shadow, and laying down the soundtrack to countless lives. Diana’s vocals often sounded thin and fragile, though dynamically suited for the early material and was able to project a sense of strength, with their songs coming off sounding honest and pure. With time and experience, Ross was able to develop a more deep and important vocal range, one that enabled her to project to the back of the venue.

And this brings me to my opening line, where The Supremes achieved their dreams and so much more, yet in so doing so, the wave they unleashed wiped out many in its wake, with other members sinking into their own self destructive behaviors, that would never seen this bit history reengaging itself to fill a void left by egos and remorse.

It’s overwhelmingly difficult to pick a compilation and say that it’s the best, as The Supremes were first and foremost a singles group, where early albums were constructed around the hits, with filler to flesh out the releases. Perhaps it would be best if you chose several of these ultimate collections and picked the songs and sounds that ride best in your back pocket, as everyone’s preference is different, building a personal compilation that will satisfy your soul … and this is a very good place to begin.
