The Dining Rooms, right out of the gate with their first album, Subterranean Modern, Volume One, manage to make a strong impression. “Occhi Neri” and “Cinemaroma 1” have an irrepressible dark, cinematic funk, while “Hip Hop Hippies” and “Stromboli Promenade” are a bit sunnier -- not by much, though. The title track, “Subterranean Modern” sounds like it crawled out of a smoky, downstairs jazz club. “Triste, Solitario Y Final” is a melancholy little piece, a perfect track with which to close the album. This album brings cinematic trip-hop to a whole new place. Namely, Italy.
