GREAT COLLECTION … PROBLEMATIC STORAGE

With my reviews for the individual albums standing, you should consider this collection on a variety of levels.

First you’re getting all of Donald Fagen’s solo material, much of which is out of print, and is rather pricey to get those original well pressed vinyl records from so long ago. All of the records have been repressed onto 180 gram vinyl and each album is delivered as two records, meaning there’s little groove compression, and much better sound, yet still played at 33 rpm’s. The price is also very good, you’d pay much more getting these gems as individual purchases. And that’s where the benefits end.

Collections of vinyl records packaged together as boxed sets can get rather speculative for the most part, especially if you’re a collector who likes to store the records outside of the jacket and place the jacket into a poly sleeve. All of the records have been placed into a jacket that is wide enough to accommodate two records, meaning that if you wish to store your records in custom storage bags and the jacket in a heavier bag, there is no room to re-house these albums in the box that they came in, and I should note that the box has been rather flimsily created, is easily damaged, and you’re going to have to find someplace to store it separately from your album collection. Many of the original vinyl releases arrived housed in gatefolds, not one of these jackets is a gatefold, which to my way of thinking would have made a much better presentation, and created a packaging that was substantial enough to stand the test of time, as the jackets that come with the set are subpar in my opinion, of the thin bendable quality those in the EU have sadly become accustomed to over the years.

With the jackets designed to hold two records, storing the records outside of the jacket also becomes problematic, as the thickness of the space to hold two records will easily get crushed, so if you store outside of the jackets, you’re going to have to insert not just a sheet of cardboard into the sleeve to prevent it from crushing, but you’re also going to have to place that cardboard into a plastic sleeve so that when it deteriorates over time, the chemicals in that paper do not discolor the jacket from the inside out. Of course you could always get some acid free matte board, which is what I did.

As to that shipping box the records came in, you might want to save that for storing the empty box in.

From there you should have no issues, the records sound great, you’ve saved a ton of money, and gotten some bonus material as well.

edited about 1 year ago

I have bought the Vinyl set on Amazon, but the album Kamakiriad has a huge defect on side A, that is, a scratch looking like the LP was squezed between something and pulled out. It is a 10-12cm segment damaged. The replacement had the same defect. I had to send both back and hope I will soon get a copy that is okay. Closely examine your discs when buying the EU/UK version.

edit on Fr Jan 12 2018: I have just received the US Version from Amazon.com. The records are packed more carefully in cushioned inner sleeves with the original sleeves aside and not in use. That avoids hairlines when removing the records from the original sleeves as packed in the UK/EU version. Too, the prints on covers and inner sleeves are sometimes a bit different between the versions. The vinyl looks much more immaculate and the album Kamakiriad came in perfect condition. I recommend to order from the US and pay the import tax rather than go with the obviously risky EU/UK version.

Where are they pressed?
Sleeves say made in EU, but Morph the Cat is definately pressed at RTI. And is a different cut than the original (Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray at AccousTech)

Kamakiriad, Condos, Nightfly (using a recent Chris Bellman cut) and the 10 extras, I think are pressed at the same place, but I don't recognize where. Record Industry?

Anyways, all are fantastic.

Beautifully done set. Standard-weight vinyl that sounds absolutely fantastic - clean pressings and amazing sound quality all-around. The Nightfly in particular sounds almost as good as the MFSL One-Step pressing that by itself cost almost as much as this entire box set (and is selling for at least 2x that now that it's out of print). All of the other records - even the "Extras" disc - has the pristine sound quality you'd expect from a Donald Fagen release. This box is a bargain, and a must-have.

I more than highly recommend this compilation. Impeccable replicas in a nice hard box. The sound quality, have no words for it besides astonishing. Your'e gonna love it! Trust me. Even the extra-LP has amazing songs on it. By the way, The Nightfly sounds better than the original and surpasses the reissue in every way thought possible.

Didn't quite know what to expect, but man, I really wanted Kamakiriad and Morph on vinyl. I'm very impressed with the pressing & sound quality.

Received yesterday and am very impressed so far. Nice flat, quiet vinyl in original sleeves with printed inners on first two albums (as were the originals) and inserts for the others. Picked it up on Amazon as a pre-order for £73. Looks like a bargain given the cost of the originals.
