Summer's 1991 album saw her abandon the Stock Aitken Waterman bubblegum of her previous "Another Place And Time" album and jump onto an urban new jack swing hip-hop style. Given the fact that Diana Ross had done exactly the same in 1989 with her Workin' Overtime album that had been torn to pieces critically and become the worst-selling album for the Motown diva, it was a courageous move of Summer. There's a strong sense throughout the album that Summer and her producer Keith Diamond had a ball in the studio, the songwriting sparkles, the creativity is flowing; there are plenty of hooks and variation of styles to keep the album interesting all the way through. Unfortunately, "Identity" was surrounded by unfortunate incidents at the time of its release, such as the "AIDS is God's punishment"-rumor surfacing again. It sold abysmally, only making a brief showing in the US R&B charts where it peaked at a disappointing #97. Donna Summer fans tend to love it or hate it.

I'm one of those who love it. After "Another Place And Time" where it seemed Donna popped into the studio and recorded the vocals in four hours and then went shopping, she really stretches herself vocally. The first single "Work That Magic" was in the same vein of "This Time I Know It's For Real", an uptempo dance track with a great melody. Why it only made it to #74 in the UK charts is a mystery to me. The opening tracks "Get Ethnic" and "Body Talk" got the jam going with slamming beats and a funky bass while the second single "When Love Cries" echoed Madonna - Justify My Love. "Heaven's Just A Whisper Away" is a gorgeous ballad, just as the closing track of side 1 "The Cry Of A Waking Heart" is a superb ethereal dance track, sung in Summer's breathy falsetto.

Side 2 opens with another ballad, "Friends Unknown", a dedication to her fans. "Fred Astaire" and "Say A Little Prayer" are great dance tracks that seemed destined for remixes that never came. "Mistaken Identity", written about the Rodney King case, continues the urban feel of the album before Donna lets her hair loose and belts away on the fun house track "What Is It You Want". The only track I could have done without is the closing track "Let There Be Peace" (written about the Gulf war) with its contrived lyrics.

"Mistaken Identity" overall is one of Summer's most solid albums and had deserved to do a lot better.
