I always liked Warlock and Doro. I must admit that I like Warlock a little more, but this doesn't mean that Doro doesn't deliver as much in her solo career. However I'm starting to notice a tendency to a more... mellow elements. I've listened to all Doro albums up to this one, and I'm afraid that in "Fear No Evil" cheesiness is starting to get more than apparent.
<p>
Even though the album opens with a series of four solid tracks, "The Night Of The Warlock", "Running From The Devil", "Celebrate" and "Caught In A Battle", which somebody could even call them homage to the Warlock years, then comes "Herzblut" a power... ballad sung in German, and along with it, the first dose of the cheesiness to come. A track which combines some cliche elements of 80's metal, but even in 1985 would have been kind of... "not again".
<p>
Feeling somewhat disappointed with the first side, I flipped the vinyl quickly in the hope that side B will pay off. Soon I would find out that this wasn't the case, things are getting even worse. "On The Run" tries desperately to keep the banners high, but being followed with a chain of failures, fails itself miserably. "Walking With The Angels" is the biggest fail of all, a ballad no less, more cheesy than cheese, which could perfectly fit in the soundtrack of... "Titanic". Sung (unfortunately) together with Tarja Turunen (ex-Nightwish), whatever that could mean. "I Lay My Head Upon My Sword" supposed to be an epic song, has indeed an epic structure, but it's really drowned in mediocrity and plagued with flat-line spirit. "Long Lost For Love", a love song apparently and yet, another brick in the wall, as it exists only to throw salt to the wound. Alas... the conclusion comes with "25 Years", a somewhat nice track but still, an epilog in a lost battle.
<p>
Of course the album has it's good moments, but generally suffers from cheesiness and from the usual cliches being over-used since decades. Album also from the lack of passion, that punch which makes the listener say "hell yeah!". In the same way, some parts which indeed had potential to preserve strength, are chocked instead and thus striped from any vitality, making the whole album sound flat and dull.
<p>
To conclude, "Fear No Evil" has nothing to fear except itself. It was a big disappointment for me. I've tried to find elements to relate with and I almost found quite a few in the half of the tracks. In general "Fear No Evil" is either a glass half-full or a glass half-empty, and to some (or many) and me, might as well be a broken glass.
