i played this for the first time after finally buying the c.d as i don't like listening to music from spewtube not to mention my pissant computer speakers. usually i have to listen to a dream theater album many times before it gets to the point of being in love with the work , not so with this one.
after getting through the first song i found the album impressed me pretty much with every moment right through to the end , needless to say , the neighbors will have to endure this album again tonight.
for me a solid 5/5.

The best of the Dream Theater albums with Mike Mangini. I was inclined to give it a 4 at first because it's not quite as good as Dream Theater's masterworks like Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory, but the album has a very fresh vibe I enjoy because (barring Build Me Up, Break Me Down) it sheds the nu-metal overtones of Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds, and goes back more to Dream Theater's roots. Some people have even charged that A Dramatic Turn Of Events is an intentional clone of Images and Words. They have a bit of a point with On The Backs Of Angels mirroring Pull Me Under, and Far From Heaven and Breaking All Illusions mirroring Wait For Sleep and Learning To Live, but other than that, the theory is pretty silly, because Build Me Up, Break Me Down doesn't even remotely sound like Another Day, and Images and Words has eight tracks rather than nine. Lost Not Forgotten also seems to have the most in common with Under A Glass Moon because of the Middle Eastern overtones, but the songs are not in the same spot on the tracklisting.

I don't know how things went so astray for Dream Theater after this. It seemed like the creative juices were flowing (especially evident in the instrumental acrobatics of Lost Not Forgotten, Bridges In The Sky, and Outcry) and they had a bright future ahead of them, but the two albums subsequent to this were extremely lacking.
