Drive By Truckers is a vijfmansband from the South of the United States. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley are the most important members. As a couple they wrote all the songs for this ' rock opera ' whose story is based on the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd. In addition, the album also tells about the everyday life in poor, black States as Alabama and Georgia. The music on this double cd does logically often think of Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band, but also to AC/DC, ZZ Top, Neil Young and The Black Crowes. We hear so long songs with beautiful soli of the three guitar players (like Lynyrd Skynyrd!) and gently rippling drum rolls. The combination of story, music and beautifully executed cd-booklet ensures that the Southern Rock Opera continues to fascinate from beginning to end. The highlights for me were the songs sung by Patterson Hood. His husky voice blends perfectly with the atmosphere of the album and sounds like a cross between Rod Stewart, Tom Petty and Christopher Kinney (of Drivin' N ' Cryin '). To sum up, Southern Rock Opera a very good, typical American rock album that is also a worthy tribute to the ' southern rock ' genre in General and to Lynyrd Skynyrd in particular.
