People often ask: what does "Dzintars" mean?
"Dzintars" is the Latvian name for amber - a semiprecious stone, thousands of years old, found on the shores of the Baltic Sea, where the Latvians settled some 4000 years ago. Latvia with its two neighbors, Estonia and Lithuania form the threshold between east and west in Europe. Latvians belong to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of nations, their language being one of the oldest living languages in Europe. Latvia, an independant nation was forcibly occupied by Soviet Union during WWII. The Soviets have repeatedly denied the basic rights of freedom and self-determination for the Latvian people. Today the Latvians are in grave danger of extinction because of planned russification by the Soviet Union. "Dzintars" is a group of young musicians, based in Portland, Oregon. All of the members are of Latvian descent except Arthur. They have a wide repertoire of songs in Latvian. On this record you will hear most of them in their English version. 1978.
