Arcana sounds great for a couple of minutes regardless of where you are in the album...problem is the musik doesn't go anywhere. A track can work well as part of a DJ set or as easy background while you do other stuff, but standing on its own there's a lack of ambition and story-telling. It doesn't sound like an original work as such. Not to sound too critical, tho'...there's nothing bad here, nothing inately skippable, you can easily hear the whole CD if you're feeling the vibe, just that there's not too much to 'listen' to. It's inoffensive prog-goa, competently-made.

Word on the mastering: the album sounds slightly muffled, it might benefit from a little frequency-sweep upwards.

Ratings guide:
5-stars: outstanding, never gets old, best of the best.
4-stars: very good with plenty highlights, tho' some weaknesses here and there.
3-stars: worth checking out but with reservations.
2-stars: not recommended. Might have potential, it's just not much good.
1-star : everything is skippable, worst of the worst.

Balancing on a proverbial razor's edge between light and dark, this is one of the very few neo Goa albums to stand tall in the company of the greats from the golden age. What I really like about this album is the slightly melancholic atmosphere that conjures not only nature scenes but also starry vistas. This makes the album a bit different from the often more up for it, happy energy of original Goa, and that is the main reason why it is a worthy addition to the genre. Sadly, I don't think that any of E-Mantra's subsequent albums match this first effort. Simply the best of new school Goa trance. ~*~

...just wow. Seriously, this album---although coming out in 2009, and incorporating elements of more recent psy-trance production---is an amazing throwback to the glory days of fast, pumping, and acid-filled Goa Trance, circa 1994-1998, perhaps. Man, what incredible stuff this is. Put simply, listen and enjoy.

Before the release of Arcana, I heard a few tracks from E-Mantra such as Metempsychosis and Voyager II. Simply put, I was blown away. Finally, a talented producer steps up and makes the music that was so long forgotten.
Then came Arcana, out of the blue, and E-Mantra made true goa trance even better. I hear people saying that E-Mantra should put more melodies in the next album, but why? So that he can sound like all the generic psy artists out there? Please no. E-Mantra is at the forefront of new school goa using deep atmospheric and pumping music. This is how it's done.

Only one point of detailed criticism is that the kick in Shamanistic Rituals could have used a lot more bass around it. Like I said, details.
My favorite track is "War of the Hierophants". Each time I listen to it, it's like a solar wind completely bulldozing over me. So beautiful, complex and powerful.

Let's also not forget the cover. Majestic and one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen.

The album is a milestone and is essential for everyone keeping true goa trance in their hearts.
Wonderful work, Mr. Carpus. We want much more.

Same level as Etnica (imo concidered as best old skool goa), just totally different.
Emenuel uses total different style and sounds as any other artist. I think we will need 5 - 10 years to relise what impact he will have on the scene; call me a wanker, but i feel like this!

If you want cliché climaxes, simplicity and only predictable tunes, don't buy this complex and outstanding CD
He uses so many moodswings in tracks it's almost confusing!!! His climaxes are so suttle, briliant melodies appearing very suttle, floating down again, to make wicked wicked spirals! if people would know with what extremally limited material he makes this, you would be surprised!

...even his ambient is massive, again sometething good with original sounds!
This is the very intense strechy soundscape goa! With all in it for me.
The only thing that disturbed me (but he editted that in his live version) were the wolf souds in track 2 "Shamanistic Rituals".

critisism as "no main melodies are not true, if you listen to the tracks carefully enough they are there, but not exploited as 99% of goa makers would do...imo

so for me a 9,999 / 10

Just stunning! I did not believe that today such an empressive goa-trance album will be released. i am listening over and over and i feel like being back in the days under a black sky full of stars and dancing through the galaxy and feel deep inside this warm feeling - part of the universe - love.
There is no weak track all is floating very well - and these melodies are just amazing. In each track is this harmony without edges.
Also the two last downtempo tracks are just beautiful. My conclusion: very good production - very mature.
