The Eagles Legacy box set, which in and of itself is very beautiful, where the decision between the Studio Albums collection was a bit staggering. While both collections contain all of the studio albums, the big difference between the two is that the Legacy package also supplies a record containing the B-side, Eagles Live a double album, Hell Freezes Over a double album, The Millennium Concert a double album, along with the double album Long Road Out of Eden. This collection also comes with a hardbound book filled with pictures and information. It’s also housed in a slipcase, though lacking the formal album jackets, the records here have been housed in two hardbound books with intact inner sleeves to hold the records.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the packaging, it’s all about the music this warm harmonic guitar driven southern California band laid on us. The sonic platform that encompasses all of the records is first rate, creating an immersive sound that removes the space between your right and left speakers, where the space between them has been infused in such a manner as to deliver a sort of cohesive wall of sound, where the two channels wash over each other inter-connectedly, creating a warm sonic whole that you’ll instantly hear.

I’m one of those who houses my records outside of the album jackets to prevent ring-wear, and it’s just an extra step that will cause damage by sliding them in and out of those jackets. With the Studio Albums collection, this is an easy process, simply repeating the time proven storage practices I’ve employed for years, while never using and protecting the actual slipcase in the box this collection was shipped in. With the Eagles Legacy I would have been forced to purchase generic cardboard jackets in order to keep these records ready for play and in within my collection … though if your intention is never to play this assemblage, this might, and I say ‘might’ be the collection I’d pick. That being said, the Legacy collection is going to set you back about $350US new. Sonically, both collections stand on equal footing as far as I’m concerned, as I’ve heard each in their entirety. In the end, it all came down to ease of use and having those original album jackets for perusal while the records spun on my turntable. While the Legacy collection, as beautiful as it is, simply seemed too fragile and was entirely too awkward (just try removing the records from those books in any graceful manner) for me to consider. With that in mind, I’ve never been one for live material, and while the B-Sides album would have been a fine addition, as brilliant as it is, I just didn’t wish something this comprehensive.

Having Hell Freezes Over makes this box set worth it by itself. Not to mention you get every album and live concert release is an added bonus. Fantastic fit and finish, just a very cool set.
