Such an important tune in relation to the first wave of tech-step releases. 'Mothership' just oozes menace and oppressiveness. beginning with a doom laden synth and bass throbs, followed by the trademark break of the genre, a crunching 2-step breakbeat. The track then appears to reach sluggishly towards it's reece bassline breakdown, conjuring up visions of the self-titled, city-sized alien 'mothership' slowly approaching overhead. Seriously classic darkside drum & bass.

The flipside, 'Defect' is no less evil either. Opening with a (possibly?) NASA space-walk vocal sample, distorted by radio static ('Drift, drift, drift......Drifting down'), loud bleeps and 2-step breaks. The intro ramps up the menace for over 3 and a half minutes before unleashing a frenetic amen assault on your senses. The amazing thing about this track is the fact that there is very little use of bass in comparioson to other No U-Turn tracks with their reece bassline obssession. Only a few bass throbs in the first part and a bit of 'boom' to accentuate the amens. Pure quality.
