Call me crazy, but if I had to pick one... just one, mind you... quintessential house track that sums up the Spirit of '92, "Gotta Dance" might be it. "Blasphemy!" you say. "What about Todd Terry, Masters at Work, Cajmere, Aly-Us?" If I could pick five, they'd all be on the list (and "Gotta Dance" probably... wouldn't). But... if I had to pick One Track, just one, to represent all of 1992, the Greatest Year of House Music Ever... let's just say "Gotta Dance" would be well in the running. First off, it's got those classic beats, clearly laid down by or sampled from Todd the God. I mean, this WAS released on Freeze Records, amirite? And there's the vocal sample, easily my favorite rip of Tramaine Hawkin's "Fall Down (Spirit of Love)" EVER. And finally, there are not-one-but-two bizarre, surreal elements that place it squarely in the "rave has lapped onto our shores" vibe that could not help but inform U.S. house that year: that sexy, trippy whispered "gotta dance" vocal; and that uncategorizable, tape-echoed, oddly mechanical drone that whirs & purrs its way through the intro & outro. The latter might be a snippet from some other Paradise Garage or Warehouse hit I've never heard of or forgotten about... heck, maybe it's even from the dub of "Fall Down" for all i know... and it bridges this track into rave and techno territory it might not dare to tread otherwise. (OK, actually we were working anything and everything from the underground we could get our hands on back then, but who's counting.) Put all together in one place, the whole exceeds the sum of it parts and drives "Gotta Dance" over the top for me all-things-1992-wise. All but guaranteed some 20-something up-and-comer is going to drop this at some famous club or big festival someday and used copies will shoot up to $50 apiece.
