As I awaited the release of this record, I must have listened to Dead Roots Rising and Spires Burn 10 times each in the month leading to street. I held off on listening to the stream, as has become my normal practice, as I wanted to crack the vinyl and be transported with the sound that only wax creates. I was not let down.

While I had not heard the release prior to receiving the vinyl, I had indeed read reviews that intimated at the evolution in Elder's sound - boy is this the truth! "Lore" reminds me of Pelican a lot, as well as Motorpsycho. I cannot avoid theses references, as Elder is becoming a very ambitious band (first album=doom masterpiece, second album=hard-rock masterpiece, third album=post-something masterpiece), so ambitious that we cannot label them anymore. With "Lore," the band reaches new heights of progressive composition. While there are elements of doom, sludge, metal, and rock throughout the record, the simultaneous morphing of each of these is where the sound settles for the just-shy-of-an-hour record, spread across four records.

Musically, this album will undoubtedly land in my Top 25 for 2015, if not in to the Top 10. The extremely CLEAN, technical nature of this recording makes it that much more incredible, but adding to that an artistically unique, beautiful, and customizeable cover is the icing on the cake.

If you are a fan of rock, doom, sludge, prog, proto, metal, or post-"anything," this record deserves a listen. From start to finish, the trio weaves a web that is damn near spellbinding and offers the listener an aural treat that all bands aspire to produce, but that few actually ever reach. Play it LOUD!!!
