"The Big Picture" was my first Elton John album. It was a gift to me when I was 19. I had just moved into my own apartment and I spent many evenings just absorbing the notes and words from this album. My interest in John's music had risen substantially since "The Lion King" and the radio single "Something About the Way You Look Tonight". I have read a number of unfavorable comments about this album, but for me it was formative. I had been raised on primarily faith-based music and this was an eye-opener. The title track is one of my favorites on the album, and the first two tracks "A Long Way From Happiness" and "Live Like Horses" are both simply breathtaking. John's piano playing is not as prominent as I would prefer on many of the tracks and though I adore this album I can't help but wonder about how these songs would sound if they could be reimagined in a more stripped down, acoustic setting.
