Goddamn this is going to be hard to write for. See I went into this album with a completely different mindset than someone who picked it up in 2004. I knew it was shit going in, and so I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I had heard most of the worst songs off here already, so I knew what to expect for Puke, My 1st Single, Ass Like that and Big Weenie. This album is amazing though... - As a concept. I'm a huge sucker for concept albums, and this one has a great concept and how the skits put it together. It's made better by what we see after this album, this album kills off slim shady, then Marshal 'closes the curtains' in the greatest hits CD, and then passes the torch to other artists under his label in the re up so he can go away. Obviously that didn't happen but thinking about it like that is really cool, not sure if that was intentional or not, but it's pretty sweet.

So back to the record. Man some of these songs are just fucking wack. Rain Man and 1st Single are about litterally nothing. The worst part is in both of these songs, and a few others, he ends them by saying "lel I just did a whole song and said nothing". Obviously he would know that these songs are shit and about nothing, but the facts that he straight says this on the songs themself seems insulting. I really wish this was just an EP with the good songs- because there are good songs.

The first 6 tracks of this album are great. They live up to the 3 previous albums, not close to MMLP or Eminem show, but just slighty worse than Slim LP. If it went on like this it may not have been a classic like the other 3, but it would have at least been good. But then Puke kicks in and we see what Encore really is. It's honestly like the first 6 tracks, the skits, Mockingbird and the final track were recorded on their own, and then Em saw that he had 2 months, the beats were made, he just had no lyrics and just said "fuck it, Piss, poo poo, weiners, butts, puking and farts". He even uses Pre-School language constantly. Like I said, doo doo instead of shit, weiners instead of dicks etc. It just gets cringe worthy as shit. I mean you can pull that off well, but Em just sounds like he took a dose of exdocy and decided that doo doo and weiners are for real men.

But It gets odd, does the shittiness of some of these tracks.... actually contribute to the concept of the album? They make Em out to be an overdosing confused man. This is his cry for help. He needs help. Em always did drugs (up to this point anyway). Slim Shady LP and MMLP showed this prominantly. Eminem Show didn't as much, but he was still taking drugs at that point. However those albums still felt like he had full control over himself, and his music. This album feels like he did for the begining, but later on in the recording proccess just died inside and lost himself. He was no longer under control of himself. But is this artistic as him showing that Slim Shady had taken him over, and this was Slim winning over Marshal finally after 3 albums of the fight between the two personalities, and so Marhsal had to kill Slim at the end so he didn't have to go through this pain anymore? No, thats overthinking it to the max, but it's an interesting thought. If by some extremely small sliver of a chance, split up into an even smaller sliver of a chance that was on purpose, that doesn't make the album as itself any better. Slim Shady LP, MMLP and Eminem Show are still bounds and leaps better than this. Just because of all of this it makes it an extremely interesting album however.

While I was listening to a digital version of the album on spotify, I have seen the artwork. It contributes to the craziness of the concept of the album. First there is the cover, he's bowing to the crowd, whatever. You can however see the flip side of this, where you see him carrying the gun behind his back (presumibally before he kills the crowd and then himself). There is also a suicide note(on the disc) where it says "To My family, 2 all my friends -- thank you for everything, To my fans, I'm sorry - Marshal." Could this be Em actually appologising for the quality of the record when he says to his fans that he's sorry. Is he appologising that he was so dosed up on drugs that he couldn't make anything better. I don't know, probably never will but it all contributes to this being such an interesting album.

Is this a genius album? Yes. The true question is, is this album intentionally genius. All signs point to no. There are some truely great songs on here, and some absolutely terrible songs on here. This album is inconsistant as all hell if you just take the tracks on there own, and there are definantly more wack songs than dope songs, but in a way the wack songs actually contribute to the whole theme of the album. Because of how crazy it is to think about this album I can't say I hated it. I can't even say I disliked it. However, I have no idea how to score this album since it's just so much here, it's a bad album, but it's badness makes it intreguing. I love this album in how bad it is, just because of how interesting of a piece of art it is. So I have no idea how to score it, so I'll just give it two scores, one on the actual quality of the album, and one on how interesting a piece of work this is and how it adds on to the album as a whole.
