Ennio Morricone, master of the spaghetti western, gets updated with MORRICONE RMX, a collection of mostly downtempo and dub remixes. Most of the tracks stay true to the originals, preserving not only the melody, but the vibe as well. Apollo 440’s take on “The Man with the Harmonica,” for instance, sounds like an old-time showdown in front of a futuristic saloon. Both “Chi Mai” (reimagined by Nightmares on Wax) and “Il Grande Silencio” (reworked by Thievery Corporation) coast along at cruising tempo. The Sofa Surfers make a complex and compelling combination of “La Bambola” and “Come Maddalena,” with askew rhythms and resonating piano chords. A few tracks hem extremely close to the originals—Terranova’s version of “For a Few Dollars More” adds a nice rhythm and some electric instrumentation to the main theme. Maybe it’s just saying that there’s not much to add to truly visionary music (though Fantastic Plastic Machine certainly give it a good go with their disco-house version of “Belinda May”).
