This is one of my all time favorite albums, unfortunately this is a bad pressing. I have returned it twice to my record store in hopes that I just got a bad copy. But the issue is indeed the pressing. The audio is very low. As the record goes on, Erykah’s vocals sound muffled. Super disappointed. I’m not going to list this album as part of my collection because I don’t feel like it is. It’s just a record I own.

I agree with what others have said about this pressing: volume is a bit low, decent amount of surface noise. Not impressed. The music, on the other hand, is slamming.

As the backstory goes, Erykah Badu was raising her profile with the release of her 2000 magnum opus, Mama's Gun and toured extensively in support of the album. In the midst of the relentless touring, she suffered writer's block, causing her to be strapped for lyrical ideas to materialize a full-length follow-up to Mama's Gun. The result after two-and-half years: this spontaneous, groove-oriented about-face she notoriously billed as an EP, while declaring that "neo-soul [was] dead." Upon its initial release in September 2003, Worldwide Underground was an eerie nut for me to crack. At the time, I was underwhelmed. I expected something partial to Mama's Gun or Baduizm, bewildered by how much of a stylistic deviation it was from her previous work. The sprawling, yet sparse grooves, the electronic instrumentation, the free-flowing scats, and unconventional music structure was enough for me to remove this from my compact disc player and stash it away somewhere. But, I soon realized that it was a brave leap forward from an adventurous musician that was unwilling to tread on her laurels for the sake of commercial appeal. Furthermore, it drew me closer to Erykah's sonic genius, or as I should say her own "Wall of Sound." If you're not listening to the sonic details of what she's unfurling deep underneath the artsy, Caron Wheeler-inspired vocal noodlings, cosmic synth blips/whirls, those throbbing digitized beats, and James Poyser's signature Fender Rhodes work, you've missed the entire boat.

In addition to Worldwide Underground being a transitional release, it was rooted in Erykah's fascinating infatuation with fusing history and cultural motifs in her art. In her usual tradition, she pulls from older musical influences while paying homage to them by recontextualizing those nuances into her own sound. Once I fully understood the direction she went into, I was enthralled by the stylistic turns she unfurled throughout the album. She obviously drew from post-disco R&B and funk music from the late 1970s/early 1980s, while stretching into early NYC hip hop from that same era. She goes even further by dropping a pivotal nod to Donald Byrd (a vital elder statesman not only in the jazz pantheon, but in the R&B and hip hop field as well) and then saluting three undervalued women who are as equally vital to hip hop as anyone else, Queen Latifah, Bahamadia, and Angie Stone. Talk about impact. I am always confounded by the slight recognition Worldwide Underground garners from Erykah's indie audience, as it laid the artistic foundation for her subsequent work. It deserves more love than it's usually given. Part of Underground's mixed critical rep has to do with Erykah bafflingly deeming it as an EP, which is quite unfortunate.

(Extra note: Extra props to the kind folks over Vinyl Me, Please for giving Erykah Badu's sorely underrated album-length EP, Worldwide Underground a dope audiophile-grade reissue and including it in this excellent box set, too. Stretching this release onto four sides, instead of cramming it all on two sides, as it was/is presented on the original 2003 vinyl release really makes the sonic wonders of this unique, funky, and fly creation breathe and "bump" more fluently. Now, if only her 2008 masterwork and follow-up to Mama's Gun, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) could get similar treatment...wishful thinking, maybe?)

I have purchased this album twice. Both times the album has been warped and unplayable. There is surface noise on the last 2 tracks on both sides. I am in search of a copy that is not warped at least.

Decent pressing for a neo-soul album in the early 2000's. Sounds digitally produced due to it being precise at points, but it has some warmth too. Glad to have it but I wouldn't chase it

Sounds pretty good on my system, (Music Hall MMF-7, Goldring Eroica w/ Soundsmith upgrades). I heard no sibilance or noise. Pressing is a bit on the quiet side, maybe.

For some reason the sleeve on this edition has the songs numbered wrong. The press has the usual order. There is another edition, same year with the songs printed in the right order.

Two opposite reviews. Who to believe? Wish there was a decent database for this kind of stuff.
