Supraphon Release Information

Sixty songs on 3 CDs, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the great Czech jazz singer’s birth.

The set bears the title of a piece composed by Luboš Fišer to lyrics by Pavel Kopta, whose names did not frequently appear in Eva Olmerová’s discography yet in this case played an essential role: “I’ve been seeking happiness and love for many years. / Perhaps desire, perhaps mere passion, or I dream too often…”

The artist’s turbulent life has been captured in a documentary and a musical, yet her experience was best told by herself, in the songs: not directly autobiographically, but through her diverse interpretational approach, ranging from slapdash country style through slackly phrased jazz to songs possessing the power of bitter chanson. The long intervals between discs, resulting both from her bohemian lifestyle and struggle with the communist regime, cannot be made up for, but a substantial part of her creation is now available on this compilation, accompanied by a commentary penned by Pavel Víšek.

The first CD comprises country and gospel, supplemented by American-style tracks written by the Korda brothers, Messrs Fořt and Mottl. The second disc features wonderful jazz pieces, from the traditional ones to bebop scatting with Luděk Hulan, while the third includes the “greatest hits”, theatre, television and film music, including a few scarcely released songs.

Some 80 years may have passed since her birth (21 January 1934), more than two decades since her death (10 August 1993), yet Eva Olmerová remains artistically and humanly poignant, lost and rising from the ashes, if only for a single evening on stage or on reissues.

A compilation of splendid music by the great singer with a turbulent life!
