Having only just opened my copy (bought in the summer) and reading the comments about pops & crackles, this vinyl is super charged with static, I had to literally peel it from the inner sleeve, I've never experienced that before in 40 years of record buying! , a wet clean & a anti static inner sleeve may well improve things immeasurably !

Having recently purchased this reissue, i cannot agree with the previous reviews. Much of the criticism seems to be regarding the original recording rather than the quality of this pressing. Yes, there was the odd click, pop or crackle, but mostly due to factory dust and nothing a quick clean didn't fix... I have owned the original Step Forward release for many years and i can testify that this reissue is a fairly faithful reproduction of the original LP's sound. In fact it sounds better than my well worn and much loved original copy.
I have always considered Dragnet to be one of the Fall's best LPs from their early (pre-Brix) period, perhaps right up there with Grotesque & Hex Enduction Hour. Its a record I keep going back to and enjoying - A Figure Walks, Printhead, Before the Moon Falls, Your Heart Out, Flat of Angles, Spectre vs Rector and Put Away are all classic Fall tunes.
I'm not a huge fan of coloured vinyl, but the black and white splatter does look quite good and including a bonus copy of the scarce Rowche Rumble / In My Area single in its original sleeve makes this reissue especially great value. Only 1000 copies were pressed and any "real Fall fan" would be crazy to miss out.

The mastering on this record is kind of a mixed bag. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad. The vocals sound like they were recorded pretty poorly, there's sometimes feedback, reverb and mic screeches that can be heard. But there are times during this record where I'm thinking, wow this sounds awesome (like the weird instrumental part toward the end of Before The Moon Falls and the supercharged Printhead) why can't the whole record sound this good. But I dunno why there is some really rough mixing here making the sound very lo-fi in some places. I think the music for the most part sounds good. The drums are punchy, bass sounds defined and guitar has warm tone. It's the vocals that obscure the music. For example, on A Figure Walks, it sounds like the vocals were overdubbed from a cassette recording or something. And the treble on Muzorewis Daughter is so vaulted, making the reverb harsh and nearly distorted. I wonder if that's the vocal effect Mark was going for or what? Either way this record suffers from some very experimental, lo-fi recording techniques. Also, a lot of little clicks n pops throughout the record but I wouldn't say too distracting. Other wise the record is flat and centered. I dunno how I feel about it overall though. Somewhat disappointed. I do like the inclusion of the 7" but I'be been waiting forever to cop a decent Fall reissue. Think the recent Kurious Orange reissue by Beggars Banquet sounded better than this.

The sound quality is pretty poor. Besides, there are too many klicks and crackling noises. This release is only for real Fall Fans.

This is not a very good sounding pressing. Though, you can forgive it if you're a fan of The Fall like myself. Great tracks throughout both sides with all the repetitive sounds and entertaining lyrics you need.

So, are all of these translucent red (when held against strong light)? I'm not saying it should be a different version, just curious if anyone has a copy that is solid black.

I have a LYN copy. With the insert but it also has a poster. Shows the band standing outside some wooden doors of an old building. The whole image is covered in a Spider web design. The fall written at the top dragnet down the side. Step forward bottom right and photo by Brendan Jackson. I've not seen any other copy that has this poster was it ever included or is it something some added later it's about 50cm x 100cm. Any ideas out there.

Dragnet remains one of my favorite releases from the Fall. The bonus tracks included on this CD edition are essential; all of them good, but esp. noteworthy is 2nd Dark Age. The sound quality on this CD is unfortunately inferior to other CD editions, such as the I.R.S. issue. The audio is muffled & the bass left murky in the mix. Still an essential release & worth picking up for the bonus tracks alone, to say nothing of the excellent record which is, unfortunately, featured in a less-than preferred mix.
