There's something very primal about DOWNWARDS' releases - despite them being healthy slices of modern in-your-face electronics dance music. The rhythms on this EP are complex & metamorphic, always changing, transforming into new shades & colours of the same sound. It reminds me of African music, where the entire village or tribe stand around taking terms in couterpointing the central rhythm, often seeming to speed up and overtake the pulsating heart of the music. The same effect appears here, where small, integral elements suddenly rise up and overwhelm the core. The effect is often hit or miss, but for me this record is an absolute hit. It's no wonder DOWNWARDS labelmates SURGEON & REGIS are taking the world of dance by storm - the quality just doesn't diminish. Three tracks - "Backlash", "Slave" & "Division" should appeal to DJs who are looking for something a little more exotic in medium-fast BPM House.
