FIFTY FOOT HOSE - CAULDRON (Weasel Disc 744213 19451 3) CD 46m
One of those remarkable and truly revolutionary of 60's albums, CAULDRON from the US West Coast band Fifty Foot Hose is still amazingly fresh and just as much a remarkable album it's always been. Originally on Mercury's adventurous Limelight label (a label more often reserved for weird electronic and avant-garde musics) Fifty Foot Hose took the Jefferson Airplane type sound, fused it with a good deal of weirdness, home-made electronic instruments, innovation in every department, comparable in its excesses to later albums by the likes of: United States Of America, White Noise, Brainticket or Friendsound. This hybrid of genres even saw the inclusion of a lazy but trippy rendition of God Bless the Child the low point of the album possibly, but sandwiched between Fantasy which ventures onto the territory of many a later Krautrock band, and Cauldron an audio LSD trip if I've ever heard one (remarkably close to some Nurse With Wound 20 years later) the icing on the cake of the original album.
But, on the CD that's not all, as we have also three bonus singles tracks, two of these are demo versions of songs from the album, and then there's the 1966 single A-side Bad Trip which is amongst the most awesomely tripped-out and deranged tracks I've ever heard. Even released now, this would be considered bizarre in the extreme!
Fifty Foot Hose were remarkable, and their album still is! Catch it now, before it disappears again for another 27 years!
