Flanger is the ambient-jazz-experimentalist’s dream: a collaboration between Burnt Friedman and Atom Heart, two of the biggest names in ambient-jazz-experimentalism. “Music To Begin With” kicks things off with a sparse arrangement, while “Options in the Fire” (with its short running time) has plenty of clicks, skittering drums, and jazzy chords to keep even distractible focused. But if you want more of that, “Short Note with a Few” is more than happy to accommodate. The highlight of the album is the final track, “Quicksilver Loom,” which is an extended jam that goes into metallic whirs and whines towards the end of its length. Definitely a fruitful collaboration.
