A lazy, ill-considered, pretentious, bitty mess. Hebden's credibility should have died a death with this release – anyone less hip would never have got away with it. 'I was not fussed about mixing or technique', he says of his early DJing, and on the basis of his DJ-Kicks, this remains true. The tracks do not fit together in any harmonious way, and conversely Hebden is unable to forge any useful contrast between one track and the next; they just cancel each out. The choices from each artist are frequently predictable – he uses the most obvious tracks by Curtis Mayfield and Stereolab, for instance. I was intrigued to see Cabaret Voltaire's superb 'Kneel to the boss' on the list, and to know what Hebden would do with it. The answer is: nothing. He takes a five-minute track and, to no constructive purpose, slaps half a minute's worth of it onto the end of a completely unrelated track. Hebden apparently falls asleep at the end of the disc, leaving all ten minutes of Autechre's 'Flutter' to play out for themselves. There are DJs who can successfully combine disparate styles. Here Hebden couldn't be bothered to try.

A very eccentric mix album that plays more like a compilation because it doesn't appear there is any actual mixing going on. A bit unexpected, given that Four Tet, unlike many other DJ Kicks contemporaries, is actually a DJ and could attempt a mix. Of course, with hip-hop, future jazz, IDM, and various experimental genres included, it would be quite difficult to mix these tracks together. It's a hodgepodge mix of many different things, and it's often discordant and unharmonious - almost chaotic at times. While I think there are way too many genres and styles being sampled, the underlying strength of the individual tracks makes this a successful compilation. It would make more sense for this CD to feature in the "Back to Mine" series than "DJ Kicks".
