Official Release #3
Initially recorded by Zappa for Capitol in 1967, as a solo composer & conductor outside of 'The Mothers'. The project made it to disc as MGM vetoed the work, resulting in FZ reworking the release for Verve - the label to whom, it was claimed, he was contracted. Some rare Capitol issues on 4-track tape exist. The reworking was released on Verve in 1968. FZ remastered the work in 1985 & 1993.
Zappa comments on the sleeve notes: "Is this Phase 2 of We're Only In It For The Money?" - which echoes his vision on that work, where he comments; "Is this Phase I of 'Lumpy Gravy'?". This "Lumpy Gravy" work contains conversations 'within a piano'.
Themes (& material) in this work can then be picked up in the work Zappa completed before his death: Civilization Phaze III

pp_ is correct. I picked up a copy of this pressing and can confirm it is the same remaster from the 80's. Compared to the other modified Zappa re-releases from that time, this is pretty faithful to the original 1968 one. The only bothersome difference is the added digital reverb that you can hear especially during the musicless dialogue sections. Considering the original Verve presses are super hard to find these days in good condition and not worn the fuck out, I'm more than happy to have this particular version that was released while he was still alive and through his own label.

Maravilloso , una obra maestra, delicadamente agresiva. Zappa el genio de los genios

Apparently this is the same remix/remaster as on the first Old Masters box set. I'm generally not a fan of those Old Masters remixes/remasters, but this one is actually OK. If Zappa tinkered with this one too, the effect is so subtle that I really don't notice it. Pressing quality is excellent. Record is flat, clean and silent.

Every one of these Zappa reissues remastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at Pallas should be in your collection! This particular reissue is very dynamic and the array of sounds and weird noises on this record are given full range. The details really come through and everything can be heard crisp and clear. Not a lick of surface noise, pressed flat and centered, comes in a polylined sleeve. I really don't know why more people haven't bought and reviewed these Zappa series reissues, I mean this is the first time this record has been pressed on vinyl in 30 years! Get yourself a nice clean copy of this reissue at a low price while you can. 10/10.

This item should not be listed. The UK record appeared never in the Canadian cover. Somebody must have mixed up 2 versions.

A Capital records 8-track version of this record exists. It has a completely different mix than the Verve records version released on vinyl. All info re: this matter can be found here: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/misc/Lumpy_Gravy.html

This is actually Gail Zappa's favourite and I think she knows a thing or two about Frank's music.
