Oh how I love the music in this film. I will have the buy the vinyl someday. Those haunting keys have stayed with me since i was a kid watching this on an old black and white tv in the 80s in the middle of the night. Those were the days. This move scared the mess out of me and still to this day think about it often.

Phantasm has long been the underdog of 1970s horror and has kept up it's appeal for almost 40 years across a series of five movies. A little more subversive and mysterious than simple slasher flicks it has many fine qualities and famous moments, but the score probably the most appealing, being funkier and more experimental than much of the competition at the time, such as Halloween or The Exorcist.
Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave not only created a cool little theme but infused much of the score with an enjoyable Disco feel that never really feels cheesy and is always fun to listen to. This album presents an arranged edit of the score, which works in its favor. I don't think a complete, chronological, and comprehensive album of the Phantasm score would be an enjoyable experience. It's not often that I take that stance, but I stand by it here.
The vinyl is presented in a lovely gatefold with awesome artwork. A colored vinyl is out there, but, sadly, I couldn't find it.

Hm, I missed out on other versions of this so bought the silver.
Looks mostly grey, and to be honest, there seems to be a good amount of surface noise.
I might try another version to see if it is any better - anyone else have a similar experience?
Gatefold is beautiful, but the obi strip is more of an obi fold, and really just needs to be taken off.

I know that here on Discogs we're supposed to treat records respectfully, acknowledging the compleat Vinyl Being, including attributes of mind & spirit that transcend mere physicality. But damn, this thing is fine! Didn't even wait to get it home. Ripped the shrink off & got busy right there in the post office parking lot.
