Freddie Mercury, Montserrat Caballé – Barcelona
Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
This Master Release contain both the original version, released in 1988 and 1992, and the newly orchestrated version, released in 2012 and 2019.
The Barcelona album originally was released in 1988.
In 1992 it was re-released because of the Olympic games in Barcelona and Freddie's passing away one year before.
The frontsleeve was different, but the rest was identical.
In 2012 the album was re-released again, because Queen moved from EMI Records to Island Records.
This time the album had a different sleeve and all keyboard parts were newly orchestrated. The basic of the album however, including all vocals, stayed the same.
Also 'Exercises In Free Love', the B-side of the 1987 'The Great Pretender' release, was added as a bonus.
This newly orchestrated version was re-released in 2019, this time omitting the bonus track featuring David Garrett, that was present on the digital and CD versions of the 2012 release.

Cannot recommend this copy because is quite noisy, it seems that the sleeve has something to do with it, after a lot of cleaning improved but yet not perfect. My biggest disappointing within the 1/2 master albums by Abbey Rd.

For those of you who wonder, this pressing is just as bad as the European one, AND it doesn't even have a download card. Big, big disappointment,

Lots of surface noise on this one, I suggest to avoid.

I bought this on Amazon and my copy has lots of crackles and weird sound in the quieter parts. Better avoid.

Stay away from this 2019 rerelease. It may be clear from scratches but it has none of the dynamics, definition and power of the original (first pressing). Which is quite extraordinary since this version even has an orchestra (and I actually prefer the orchestral version above the original). This pressing is just flat and sounds like a compressed digital master.

One of the most astonishingly brilliant collaborations in the history of music ever, albeit sadly overlooked.
Montserrat and Freddie absolutely were a match made in heaven!

One of the most beautiful experience in music. When the Genius of Rock Freddie Mercury meets the Classic Opera singer Monserrat Caballé.
When I bought the LP in 1987 I was 19 yo and I thought he was crazy, after a worlwide success like "Mr. Bad Guy", to release a freak experiment like "Barcelona", but I was sooo wrong!!!
The whole album is a fascinating journey trough a universe of sounds where the two voices run trough and come together in a wonderful ensemble.
Considering that at that time the whole album was recorded using only the synthesizers the result is great, but now with the use of a proper orchestra the sound is completely different and the result is amazing.
Dear Freddie, can you hear now your Timeless Masterpiece sounding like you always ever wanted?I bet you can and now you're absolutely satisfied...it's a pity that you're not here with us to enjoy this.
I hope that next step will be a proper Opera to perform in the theaters, but with all the garbage that is outside pretending to be singers or artists, probably it's much much better that no one touch this Masterpiece!!!
The whole Box Set is a joy for the ears, for the soul and for the mind. Absolutely studied in every minute detail to offer the best experience to the listeners, worth every single cent I spent to buy it!
The highest moments in my opinon, except for the title track that is a classic evergreen, are "How can i go On" that contains a phrase reprise similarly in "The show must go on" 4 years later.
But you can't escape also to the infinite beauty of "Guide me home" or "The golden boy", "The fallen priest", and the lyrics and the music will capture you completely from the beginning to the end.
I truly reccomend the purchase of this Box Set, or at least of the re-edited CD, because it's a real must-have for every good and true music connoisseurs.
Thank you Freddie, God bless you.

January 17, 2021Record hasn't got antistatic folder, but it's not a problem to let it out from the inner sleeve
Didn't notice the surface noise that I read in other comments
As a Queen and Freddie fan, I don't think it's a very good record, it's more fore collection, than audio quality
