Adam Freeland tries to get you to COPE™. And if the rock/breaks is something that appeals to you, this album will hit the spot. Kurt Baumann, for instance, brings in the chanting to "Under Control" as the beats thump underneath and the processed guitar feedback screeches around. "Strange Things" gets more gravelly, but by sweeps of "Bring It," you've pretty much got the idea. But then "Mancry" suddenly adds a more emotive melody and cascading drums for an M83-like build, which culminates, somewhat anti-climactically, into "Borderline." And while the grit of their cover of "Rock On" has its appeals, it doesn't quite add anything new. But then comes the shoegazing "Silent Speaking" to throw things into lovely disarray, before the electronic element reasserts itself on "Best Fish Tacos In Ensenada" and the rock on poppy "Only A Fool (Can Die)." "Morning Sun" and "Wish I Was Here" returns to the same-same of earlier, but they're not bad by any means. But neither are they that thrilling. It's OK. I'll cope.
