Fusion, Russ Gabriel’s moniker for his work on his own Ferox label, is fusion of the highest order. There’s jazz, electro, techno, and just plain weirdness in full effect on The Singles. The Rei Mitsui version of “Deep in the Forest,” for instance, has all four of the previously mentioned aspects all in the same song. “Wolf and June” is a mellow track, simple yet refined, while “No One in the World” is electro at its most romantic. “Never Forget It” is disco-electro (a strange but appealing combination) while “Block Out the World” and “Cube of the Blues” go a more mellow route. “Despures” is electro-jazz the way it was meant to be done. Sadly, a few of the tracks seem to have an abrupt fade at the end, but overall, it’s a strange and rewarding album.
