The Gate Zero albums are hidden gems among late period FAX output. GZ's albums differ from the stereotypical FAX sound with their shortish tracks, complex beat programmining and the usage of organic sounds and samples. This is most evident on "Tides", which isn't proper ambient at all, it's much closer to IDM and dub techno. The lovely oceanic synth sweeps on GZ's earlier albums are mostly missing here, replaced by a more nervous and gray sound. That doesn't mean "Tides" is a bad record, though; the combination of intricate techno rhythms and slow drones reminds me of Alter Ego's "Decoding the Hacker Myth", which is a high praise. Just don't expect this to be the kind of sweet, chilling-out-while-lying-on-the-coach type of music that's normally associated with FAX.
