The music covers a wide timespan from medieval to late 19th century but the need for careful arrangements for such a large orchestra imposes a degree of homogeneity on some varied sources. This reduces the folk element in the early stuff but also the oompah element in the polkas and mazurkas of a later period. According to the French-language sleevenotes, the aim is to show that Alsace had a musical life of its own and was not just where Germany met France. It certainly proves the enduring vitality of Alsatian musical life but the separate French and German strands remain easy to identify. A goodie.
